A bachelor’s degree or higher is not required from an LVN to start practicing. Formal training that usually takes a year or two to finish is the usual training route for LVNs.
The LVN program provided by Galveston College includes clinical exposures, classwork, and laboratory. A student is considered a graduate of the LVN program after completion of the required 44 or more credits. They can then become licensed LVNs after taking and passing the NCLEX-PN exam.
Minimum Requirements for Galveston College LVN Program
The Galveston College LVN program, like other LVN programs in Texas, receives applications during fall. The minimum requirements an aspiring student needs to meet include:
- Submit proof of GED
- Pre-requisite courses such as HECO and BIOL have to be completed. These courses can be taken during summer, fall, and spring sessions.
- A student is required to take the HESI A2 test. The test should show a result of a cumulative score of at least 65 and a reading section score of at least 70. Some of the subjects included in the HESI A2 test are anatomy and physiology, reading comprehension, general knowledge, vocabulary, grammar, and math.
- Submit proof of high school completion as mandated by the Texas Board of Nursing.
- Submit proof of Hepatitis B series immunizations.
- Initial acceptance by the Galveston College LVN program needs final approval. A drug screen test and physical exam need to be completed before a student is given final approval.

Galveston College LVN Program Class Information and Schedule
The Galveston College LVN program is a diploma program. Attendance is critical for the 4-module and 40 hours per week classes.
First Module – Monday to Friday
- 9 AM -2 PM labs/lectures for 4 days a week
- 6 AM to 3 PM for the 1 day a week clinical exposure
Second, Third, and Fourth Modules – Monday to Friday
- 9 AM -2 PM labs/lectures for 2-3 days a week
- 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM clinical rotations 2-5 days a week
- Alternative clinical rotation schedules for special clinical exposures such as Pediatric and OB – 8 AM to 6 PM Saturdays
The challenge of completing one of the state-approved LVN programs can be physically and mentally demanding.
The last four weeks of the program includes preparation for the NCLEX-PN exam. It is highly critical for students to attend Monday to Friday classes for NCLEX preparation.
The overall total of laboratory and didactic hours of instruction amounts to (616) six hundred and sixteen hours with (954) nine hundred and fifty-four hours for clinical exposures. The program runs for 52 fifty-two weeks excluding vacations and holidays.
